When we're hurt by others, we're not nearly... as hurt by our enemies as we are by the people we thought were friends, people who we believed cared for us and would protect, defend and support us. Being disappointed, let down, betrayed, abandoned or simply unsupported by our friends is far worse a thing than being mistreated by a stranger, someone we don't expect to be there for us, or by a person that we know clearly dislikes us and doesn't wish us well. It's not the actions of our enemies that are often most devastating to us, but it's the actions -- or non-actions -- of people we trust that really do us the most harm. Friends can be far more dangerous to our emotional well being than enemies might be.
